History of the hotel in the center of Ortisei

The Dolomites Passion Hotel Maria has a long history that began in the late 1800s

Hotel Maria was built in the last decade of the 17th century and has now developed to one of the most renewed hotels of Ortisei.

With the rebirth of tourism after the first World War family Schmalzl built the first outdoor swimming pool in Val Gardena and refurbished Hotel Maria. This years of glory had an end with Hitler’s and Mussolini’s agreement that South Tyroleans who wanted to keep speaking German had to move to Austria.  Family Schmalzl moved, because they were promised to get a similar business in Austria like they had in Ortisei. This process was organised by the authority of Trivenice, who  took over the management of Hotel Maria for the next 20 years.

1963 Rosa and Luis Moroder bought the structure. They renovated it and gave the bed and breakfast to Family Demetz, relatives of the owner of Hotel Angel.
In 1981 Rosa’s and Luis’ son Faust and his wife Margherita started managing the hotel by their own. With a lot of love and diligence they pushed the hotel to the good conditions of today.
